Taíno Clay Figurines

The Taínos were the pre-Columbian inhabitants of the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles and the north of the Lesser Antilles. It is a town that came from South America, specifically from the mouth of the Orinoco River, passing from island to island, reducing or assimilating the oldest settlers, 12 such as Guanajuato and Ciguayos whose cultures are prior to arrival of the Taínos. The Taíno language belongs to the Macroarahuacan linguistic family, which extends from South America through the Caribbean.

At the time of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492, there were five Taíno chieftains in the territory of Hispaniola (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic), each led by a chief chieftain (chief), to whom tribute was paid. Puerto Rico was also divided into cacicazgos. The chief or chief of the tribe was paid a significant tribute. The chiefs had the privilege of wearing gold pendants called guanin, living in rectangular huts instead of oval that the inhabitants inhabited, and sitting on wooden stools when they received guests. At the time of the Spanish conquest, the largest settlements of the Taíno population could reach up to 3,000 people each. The Taínos traditionally competed against their neighbors: the Caribbean tribes, another group originally from South America, who lived mainly in the Lesser Antilles. The relationship between the two groups has been the subject of much study.

For much of the fifteenth century, the Taino tribe was being driven to the northeast of the Caribbean (what is now South America) due to the incursions of the Caribs. Many Caribbean women spoke the Taino language due to the large number of captive Taino women between them.3

In the 18th century, Taino society had been devastated by introduced diseases such as smallpox, as well as other factors such as mixed or interracial marriages and forced assimilation to the plantation economy that Spain imposed on its Caribbean colonies, with the subsequent import of African slave workers. The first outbreak of smallpox recorded in Hispaniola occurred in December 1518 or January 1519.4 Nevertheless, several indigenous peoples survived until the 19th century in Cuba. The Spaniards who first arrived in the Bahamas, Cuba and Hispaniola in 1492, and later in Puerto Rico, did not bring women. They took the Taino women for their wives, which resulted in mestizo children.

Indigenous Taíno people were the largest group inhabiting the Caribbean islands at the time of European contact in 1492. Their territory extended from Venezuela to Florida including the Bahamas, being Cuba, La Hispañola and Puerto Rico the most populated territories. By 1550 the Taíno were almost extinct due to illnesses brought to their territories by Spanish colonizers, however, their art and vocabulary survived being kept alive by ‘mestizo’ descendants.

These Taíno artwork figurines are handmade from clay and fire, then painted in a variety of neutral and bright colors.

Taino Map
