ITIBA TAUVAVA: Mother Earth according to Taíno natives. She is pregnant with four children representing the four cardinal points of the world or the four winds.
Indigenous Taíno people were the largest group inhabiting the Caribbean islands at the time of European contact in 1492. Their territory extended from Venezuela to Florida including the Bahamas, being Cuba, La Hispañola and Puerto Rico the most populated territories. By 1550 the Taíno were almost extinct due to illnesses brought to their territories by Spanish colonizers, however, their art and vocabulary survived being kept alive by ‘mestizo’ descendants.
