Wichie Torres

The Puerto Rican traditions and costumes caught Wichie Torres’ feeling and interest; they although made a big impression on him and as a young boy he began to capture them in drawings and paintings. He began his art studies with Professor Carola Colón Coavas in 1967; later he continued studying with Frank Cervoni at the School of Plastic Arts in the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, in Puerto Rico. He attended the Catholic University of Puerto Rico through a scholarship.
Wichie Torres, born in the rich Afro-Caribbean stew of Ponce, the principal city of southern Puerto Rico on March, 29, 1952.

 

The Puerto Rican traditions and costumes caught Wichie Torres’ feeling and interest; they although made a big impression on him and as a young boy he began to capture them in drawings and paintings. He began his art studies with Professor Carola Colón Coavas in 1967; later he continued studying with Frank Cervoni at the School of Plastic Arts in the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, in Puerto Rico. He attended the Catholic University of Puerto Rico through a scholarship. Wichie Torres then moved to New York, where he studied under Rafael Sustachi. In 1973 he took a different road, this time to Mexico where he studied at the San Carlos Academy of Arts. But Puerto Rico continued to be his greatest inspiration and since he has returned to celebrate his home in paintings.

In 1992, Wichie Torres’ doctor discovered he had a heart disease and needed an urgent heart transplant, in August of the same year he proceeded to receive his first heart transplant in the Tampa General Hospital of Florida, his recovery was successful, and allowed him to continue painting this time changing his style. His way of living change completely, he was more thankful for his life.

Again in the year 2004 a shocking notice came again to his family, this time he needed a second heart transplant, the doctors said he had little life left. He was admitted immediately in the Centro Cardiovascular of San Juan, Puerto Rico for two months. On the 5th of July of that year, he received his new second heart transplant, being the first person to have received a second heart transplant in all the Caribbean having a very successful recovery again.

Wichie Torres who has lived with three hearts, has been a very multifaceted artist, his phases have been well establish and known. The great success and the public acceptance of his magnificent pictorial art have allowed him to plentifully dedicate time to create masterpieces.
