Shelby Harris

His ghetto fabulous, proto-Renaissance-ian Madonnas reflect back on their ancient world as they whisper critical, disapproving words to an uber-slick Steve Jobs.

Shelby Jay Harris’ kitschy contemporary works are an exciting bridge between old and new,

subconsciously educating the masses with his off-the-cuff references to art history in modern context. His ghetto fabulous, proto-Renaissance-ian Madonnas reflect back on their ancient world as they whisper critical, disapproving words to an uber-slick Steve Jobs. Adam and Eve stand in antiquated contrappasto, with the first man wearing nothing more than a banana hammock and bow tie, while naughty Eve offers him a cocktail glass – no doubt an appletini. Venus of Urbino finally got out of her castle, and fired the maid…with all the money saved she now lounges beachside with a wine bottle and a book in Harris’ small painting.
His work has been compared to the likes of Robert Arneson, Roy de Forest, William Wiley, Wallace Berman and George Hermes as well as other artists of the Beat Generation. Like them, his eclectic paintings are filled with biting humor and an intriguing vitality that offers more to the viewer than meets the eye.
