Stanley Coll

Stanley Coll was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico in 1954. He studied in the School of Plastic Arts where he majored in painting, working under the tutelage of Professor Frank Cervoni. He graduated in 1984. Afterwards, he worked as the illustrator for special articles in Channel 11 TV News and in other mass media. He joined El Nuevo Dia newspaper in 1986 as one of its most outstanding illustrators, being rewarded with various international prizes in illustration through the pages of this newspaper.
STANLEY-C0LL

Culminating his phase as illustrator in 1995, Coll is dedicated with great passion to painting, means by which in the last nine years he has received the recognition of critics and art collectors. His work is part of important collections; he has participated in auctions of high prestige at the Museum of Art and the Contemporary Museum of Art, both in Puerto Rico, and carrying out exhibitions in art galleries in the island. In a continuous search to define his artistic language, Coll has carried his work toward the creation of a peculiar style that nourishes itself of images and real situations that he has achieved to perceive in the streets and to transform into his own urban world with a clear satirical –social intention. His personages belong to a cultural variant that has taken root in our people and might have been unnoticed unless the critical look of the artist had not examined it.

The work of Stanley Coll acquires universal stature of art beginning from the settings and personages that are born inside the most simple and everyday insular situation, showing us a hidden world that at the same time suggest and discover the beauty and the social struggles of our people to maintain their own identity. We can affirm that Coll’s work reaches with transparency the spectator when we cite the art critic Jose Antonio Perez Ruiz: “His paintings are unedited visions of all that happens in our social milieu.”
