In the year 1939 a ship called “De La Salle” left the coast of Spain towards America,the Dominican Republic with several Spanish exiles on board among them ,Angel Botello Barros,Manolo Pascual ,Pratts Ventos,Josef Gausach,Vela Zanetti,all artists,arriving in Dominican Republic they were instrumental in shaping the fine art movement in the western hemisphere,this is part of the legacy of one of those brave men.
Just published in the United States the book " A sculptor in exile, life and work of Manolo Pascual. " The publication in English is a collection of critical essays , anecdotes and photographs of the founder of our National School of Fine Arts . During the Spanish Civil War a group of artists and intellectuals had to flee their country and expatriates working in various nations of America. His daughter Ariadna Pascual Wright ( 1933 ) and the writer of these lines offer a firsthand account of the creative work and the vicissitudes of the great sculptor exile .
The events in the life of Manolo Pascual could well serve for a novel or a film. Before the war was a successful artist and winner of important awards such as the Prix de Rome . In that ancient city came to establishing friendship with the renowned Spanish writer Ramon Valle Inclán . On his return to Spain (1936 ) he joined the army of Republicans , until in 1939 he is forced to go undercover to France and then to exile in Dominican Republic .
Once on the island , the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo receives the intellectual and visionary Dr. Rafael Diaz Niese , good lights invite Manolo Pascual to form the National School of Fine Arts . This happens in 1942 under the guidance of that master some of the most important figures of twentieth century Dominican art form. Liz Sunday , Gaspar Mario Cruz, Gilberto Hernandez Ortega , Ada Balcácer , Fernando Peña Defilló , Clara Ledesma , Oscar de la Renta and Luis Martinez Richiez , among others .
